Biography 簡歷

Prof Wen-Hua Chen has more than 20 years’ experience in research and development of unmanned aircraft systems. I was a Chair Professor in Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering at Loughborough University, UK, before joining PolyU in 2025. His expertise covers control, signal processing and AI and their applications in aerospace and automotive engineering. He was the founder of Loughborough University Centre for Autonomous Systems (LUCAS).  He and his team received Charles Shape Beecher Prize from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and Unmanned Aircraft System Innovation award from the Royal Aeronautical Society, UK. Prof Chen was the President of Chinese Society of Automation and Computing in UK, and Chengjiang Chair Professor of the Ministry of Education of China, FIEEE, and FIMechE and FIET.  He was awarded EPSRC Established Career Fellow in 2020. 

陳文華具有二十多年從事無人飛機研究和開發的經驗。曾任英國拉夫堡大學航空與汽車工程系講座教授。主要致力於控制,信號處理,決策及人工智能在航空汽車及其它領域的應用。創建了拉夫堡大學自主系統研究中心。曾獲拉夫堡大學未來科研領袖獎,英國機械工程學會Charles Shape Beecher獎,帶領的團隊榮獲英國皇家航空學會無人飛機創新獎. 陳文華曾任全英華人自動化與電腦協會主席, 教育部長江講座教授. 為IEEE Fellow, 英國註冊工程師(CEng),工程與技術學會Fellow (原IEE),機械工程學會 Fellow。2020年榮獲英國工程與自然科學研究委員會設立的傑出資深人才獎。在2024年斯坦福全球前2%科學家榜單上,在工業工程和自動化學科,終身影響力排全球第30位,全英國第2位。

Challenges in Realising Safe Low-Altitude Flight

Safety is of paramount importance for realising low altitude flight of unmanned aerial vehicles and eVTOL aircraft. It is imperative to address safety issues from all aspects including policy, regulation and technology, particular when low-altitude flight becomes prevalence, gradually penetrating from country sides to urban or populated areas.  This talk identifies several key areas that are vital for safe low altitude flight; namely, safe flight under adverse and harsh conditions (e.g. unreliable satellite navigation and communication, cyberattack, and complicated wind and weather conditions),  active contingent management and recovery in the event of faults and failure,  and reliable detecting and tracking of low flying objects for air traffic management and  anti-drones. A collective effort is required from all stakeholders. It is argued that without a comprehensive set of solutions to these challenges, it is unlikely to fully realise the potential of low-altitude economy. 

安全對於實現無人機和電動垂直起降(eVTOL)飛機的低空飛行至關重要。當低空飛行日益普及,逐漸從鄉村滲透到城市或人口稠密地區時,必須從政策、法規和技術等各個方面解決安全問題。本次演講確定了對低空安全飛行至關重要的幾個關鍵領域:在不利和惡劣條件下的安全飛行(例如,不可靠的衛星導航和通訊、網路攻擊以及複雜的風力和天氣條件)、發生故障時的主動應急管理和恢復,以及對低空飛行物體進行可靠的探測和跟踪,以便空中交通管理和反無人機。這需要所有利害關係人的共同努力。如果沒有一套全面的解決方案來應對這些挑戰,就不可能充分發揮低空經濟的潛力。
