Symposium Objective

AI-Driven Dynamics: Charting the Course for Translation and Interpreting Certification, Services, and Education

The objective of this symposium is to critically engage with the transformative effects of artificial intelligence on the landscape of translation and interpreting. The symposium seeks to:

1. Evaluate the widespread impact of AI tools in translation and interpreting fields, and their potential influence on the format and content of CATTI exams.
2. Examine the evolving landscape of the language service industry and the access how AI is changing criteria for talent acquisition.
3. Discuss necessary adaptations within university translation and interpreting programmes, including the training of teaching staff, to accommodate the rise of AI technologies.
4. Foster a collaborative exchange of insights between academia, technology companies, and industry stakeholders, on effectively navigating AI advancements.

The Symposium is Organized by The Centre for Translation Studies (Centre) of CBS, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Established in 1989 with an endowment fund donated by the Wei Lun Foundation, our Centre for Translation Studies is dedicated to conducting academic and professional research in translation studies and related areas. In addition to research, the Centre is actively involved in organizing relevant academic conferences and publications. In recent years, the Centre has expanded its professional activities, providing short courses on translation and offering consultancy services to fellow departments within the university as well as in the local community.

• Foundation with the intention of promoting scholarly activities in the field of translation.
• The Centre realizes this intention as supporting scholarly work and the exchange of ideas in the fields of translation studies and translation history, while helping to raise standards of translation pedagogy and professional training, developing innovative techniques and methodologies for translators, and providing professional services (including consultation) not only to other departments of PolyU but also to the community at large.

The CATTI Management Center (or Management Center of China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters, CICG) is primarily responsible for the training and evaluation of foreign language talent. At the CATTI Management Center, we develop and operate programs including CATTI, tests for foreign language proficiency for non-professional translators and interpreters, standard setting and evaluation for translators and interpreters, mutual recognition of CATTI and other countries' authoritative certifications for translation and interpretation, the CATTI Cup National Translation and Interpretation Competition, and the China Universities Debating Competition (CUDC). Additionally, we have established strong relationships with more than 2,000 Chinese and overseas colleges and universities.
