Workshop (8) Empowering Language Educators with Visible AI: From Lesson Planning to AI Literacy (14:00 - 15:30)
Speakers: Jac Ka Lok Leung (Director of AI Literacy Hub, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology); Gisa Chan (Advisor for AI Literacy Hub, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)
Medium of Instruction: English
Target Audience: Primary and Secondary School Teachers
Venue: BC203, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Abstract
This hands-on workshop guides language teachers through a complete AI-assisted teaching workflow while explicitly developing critical AI literacy. Aligning with evidence-based calls for transparency, accountability, and human oversight in AI by UNESCO (Miao & Cukurova, 2026), the session foregrounds a design principle of visible, personalized, “pedagogy-first AI” integration. Participants can use their own devices through a progressive sequence of activities.
First, they will be introduced to an AI literacy framework by Ng et al. (2021) to situate classroom AI use within broader competencies for evaluating system outputs, limitations, and social impacts.
Second, teachers use various AI tools to generate lesson plans and produce supporting resources (mind maps, vocabulary sets, and quizzes) for language learning contexts with an emphasis on the teacher’s role as creators and curators. The core practical segment has participants configure a writing or speaking task with a custom rubric and experience a student-facing learning companion and learning journals for brainstorming, feedback, reflection and revision.
Third, we will demonstrate a teacher dashboard that makes student–AI interactions visible through logs and analytics, enabling formative insight into common challenges and supporting students’ responsible use of AI (OECD, 2023). Building on these “visible interactions”, the workshop models how to teach AI literacy: critically interrogating feedback, identifying hallucinations and bias, practicing effective prompting, and reinforcing ethical academic integrity.
The session concludes with implementation planning and curated professional learning pathways.

Workshop (9) Implementation and Strategies of Integration of GenAI in Secondary School Language Teaching Oriented Classrooms Towards Development of Core Competencies (14:00 - 15:30)
Speaker: Alina Ling Qiu (Director and senior advanced teacher, Guangdong Guangya High School)
Medium of Instruction: Bilingual
Target Audience: Secondary School English Teachers
Venue: BC402, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Abstract
In the field of second language education, the capacity of GenAI to generate, reformulate, and extend content offers new opportunities for fostering students’ critical thinking and linguistic competence. Drawing on classroom-based examples from both junior and senior high school settings where GenAI has been delicately integrated into language teaching, this workshop provides a platform for open discussion on whether and why teachers made specific pedagogical modifications, as well as the extent to which students benefited from these interventions. Within a limited timeframe, the workshop will also present and engage participants in practical strategies for integrating GenAI into language classrooms, with a focus on the development of core competencies.

Workshop (11) Building a Practical Toolkit for Evaluating AI-Generated Language Teaching Materials (16:00 - 17:30)
Speaker: Sarah Warfield (Senior Lecturer, New York University Shanghai)
Medium of Instruction: English
Target Audience: Kindergarten, Primary, and Secondary School Teachers
Venue: AG206, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Abstract
As AI tools become part of everyday lesson preparation, language teachers need reliable ways to judge whether AI-generated materials are accurate, appropriate, and instructionally useful. This hands-on workshop guides participants through creating a practical evaluation toolkit they can use to review AI-generated classroom materials quickly and confidently. Participants will analyze sample AI-produced language activities, identify strengths and weaknesses, and collaboratively develop criteria for assessing linguistic quality, level suitability, pedagogical value, and alignment with learning goals. They will then apply their criteria to additional examples and refine their framework into a usable checklist and decision process. By the end of the session, each participant will have a customizable evaluation tool they can immediately use to review AI-generated materials before classroom use. The workshop focuses on equipping teachers with concrete strategies that support critical AI literacy and enable them to integrate AI tools more effectively, responsibly, and purposefully in language teaching contexts.
