Background
The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) was founded in 1994 to promote research and scientific exchange in the field of spinal deformities. Building on earlier meetings focused on surface topography and three-dimensional imaging, the Society provides a dedicated forum for researchers and clinicians to share findings and advance understanding in this area.
The Society’s objectives are to encourage the study of spinal structure, the aetiology and pathogenesis of deformities, and the development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Research topics include gross and 3D body topography, imaging, biomechanics, neurodevelopment, gait and movement analysis, and clinical applications across the life course.
IRSSD hosts an international meeting every two years, bringing together a multidisciplinary community of scientists, orthopaedic surgeons, medical practitioners, and allied health professionals. These meetings are recognised for their collegial spirit, scientific rigour, and the breadth of contributions—from basic science to clinical practice. Locations have included Stockholm, Burlington, Ghent, Sapporo, and Montreal, reflecting the Society's global reach.
Membership is open to those active in spinal deformity research or clinical practice, with eligibility based on contributions to the Society’s meetings or relevant peer-reviewed publications.
The IRSSD remains committed to supporting excellence in spinal research and fostering international collaboration for the benefit of those affected by spinal deformities.
