Abstract
Despite a rich, 20-year history of service-learning experimentation and implementation in Vietnam, scholars and practitioners alike recognize the need for “top-down” support and a deeper, more culturally sensitive institutionalization strategy to increase SL sustainability in Vietnamese (Asian) higher education. This workshop will explore this history of SL in Vietnam HE and then utilize two well-known institutionalization rubrics to intentionally engage participants to begin to co-create a modified, or new, more culturally sensitive self-assessment rubric for the institutionalization of SL in Vietnamese (Asian) higher education. First, via critical exploration of extant assessment rubrics, participant will be engaged and challenged to consider which constructs or categories of higher education SL are more “universal” (and, therefore, should be maintained) and which are overly embedded in the “Western” context (and therefore should be abandoned). Next, building on the clearly identified need in the literature, specific attention will be paid to both the moral values development of students and citizens as well as the current political economic environment in Vietnam to begin to build a new Self-Assessment Rubric for the Institutionalization of SL in Vietnamese (Asian) Higher Education.
