Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between course learning outcomes of a service-learning program (NSTP12-Bigkis) in the Philippines. Data was gathered from 104 third-year psychology students who were tasked to facilitate an integrated mental health and substance use prevention program for Filipino youth called Lusog-Isip Kabataan Education (LIKE). Results suggest that being able to demonstrate pakikipagkapwa–a distinct Filipino sense of community and fellowship, facilitates more effective application of technical skills and sustainable development frameworks during service-learning. Moreover, being able to identify how their academic discipline can be used for service increases how much the program helps them develop a sense of commitment and vocation towards serving marginalized sectors of society. These findings highlight the formative impact of community psychology and suggest which learning outcomes in service-learning are key to continued engagement with marginalized sectors of society.

Abstract

Service-learning integrates meaningful community engagement with reflection and reciprocal learning experiences to enrich student learning, foster social responsibility, and empower communities. This study explores the impact of service-learning experiences on students' motivation and development. Data from 452 students at private higher education institutions in India were analysed. The results indicate that service-learning experiences significantly influence both student motivation and development, with student motivation partially mediating the relationship between service-learning experiences and student development. The findings underscore the importance of carefully structured service-learning courses and the role of student motivation in enhancing developmental outcomes.

Abstract

Service-learning is a pedagogical approach involving students interacting with underprivileged individuals in unfamiliar and sometimes challenging environments. While previous research has explored the effects of service-learning on various aspects of adolescents' development, emotional experience is a recent focus in the research on service-learning. Over the last two decades, a growing body of research has examined how certain types of experiences in service-learning trigger individuals' emotions. This article provides a scoping review of research on emotional experiences in the context of service learning. This review offers insights and recommendations for future research to address the gaps in the current research. The particular contexts of Asia will be discussed as well.
