Abstract
This article explores the transformative power of service-learning and community partnerships in social work education, drawing from the authors’ two decades of experience at Yunnan University in China. In the context of a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world, service-learning emerges as a vital pedagogical approach bridging theory and practice. The paper discusses theoretical frameworks, including Dan Butin's four perspectives, and outlines various course designs and community partnership models developed at Yunnan University. Two case studies illustrate the application of a Mixed Model in developmental social work and sustainable community tourism. Key features and principles of successful community partnerships are identified, emphasizing persistent engagement, reciprocity, and reflexivity.
The article highlights two key implications of transformative service-learning and community engagement: democratic community engagement epistemology and the "Engagement of Hope" model. These frameworks represent a shift towards more collaborative, reciprocal partnerships between higher education and communities. They challenge traditional knowledge hierarchies, promote co-creation of knowledge, and offer a more equitable approach to community engagement. This integrated approach enhances educational outcomes, fosters social justice, and develops engaged professionals capable of addressing complex societal issues. Ultimately, it reinvigorates higher education's civic mission and provides a hopeful pathway for tackling future challenges.
